After seeing photos from The Dandee Donut Factory, I needed to take a trip for myself to try. The drive was worth it, the donuts are delicious!
To truly taste the donut vs toppings, I take small slices. I try the donut itself for texture and level of sweetness first. I take one little bite, then continue on with the full donut. This was the first time that the donut alone, was so delicious I would eat it without any icing or topping. It was like a piece of fried dough at the fair. It was light and airy with a little bit of sweetness and butter flavor mmmmmmm, absolutely perfect! I took 3 more slices without the icing just to make sure.
My Favorites:
Maple Bacon ~ REAL slices of bacon, no fake bacon bits here
Staten Island ~ strawberry jelly (sweet and a little tart), vanilla icing, and in a heart design
Eclair ~ get 2 because they are so airy light and the filling so scrumptious, you will want another!
What I wasn't as impressed with:
Dandee Chocolate ~ the texture absolutely perfect, but not enough chocolate flavor in my opinion. I didn't get double chocolate with icing, but will next time.
From The Dandee Donut Factory Website: What makes Dandee so special is our variety of 50 donuts made the old-fashioned way by highly skilled bakers. Our original Pompano baker is still hand-rolling and hand-cutting each donut, and has trained a full team to make donuts the old-fashioned way at every Dandee Donut Factory location. Dandee Donuts are baked in small batches 24 hours a day, ensuring that every donut sold is always fresh and delicious. Our donuts are all iced and finished individually by hand using our own unique recipes for frostings, glazes and fillings with only the best, most wholesome ingredients.

THE CORMORANT 228 Merrimac St Newburyport
When restaurant employees become restaurant owners, great things can happen!
Katie Hickey and Kristen Kilty, the co-owners of The Cormorant are hiring for their new spot at 228 Merrimac St Newburyport. It is a small 27 seat restaurant, with a full liquor license.
Their website states:
'When you’re in the mood for an old favorite with a modern twist, we’ll be here by the river, serving up the best burgers and sandwiches we can think of, more shakes you can shake a stick at, and dinner & drink specials on regular rotation.' The focus will be on the local clientele and be your next home... away from home.
We want to take the unknown out of hospitality work, so no tipping is expected at The Cormorant.
All staff are compensated with livable wages, reliable scheduling, and paid time off. We believe these financial incentives, along with progressive training, help to create a more resilient and sustainable food service experience that benefits everyone.
Back to hiring and their job posting I found on Tarta.ai. They are offering great benefits, a 5 day work week, vacations and no late nights or early mornings. This is a restaurant workers dream job, with employers that truly care and show it.

Donut Lovers Rejoice!
We have all been waiting patiently. Now the day is finally coming when once again, Peabody Tanners can grab our favorite donuts without the trek to Salem. The new location will be down the street from the old, at 6 Bourbon St Suite F. Will it be easier for PVMHS students to cut through the rink to get there or was it easier to walk down the hill? As a previous student, the new location is easier to get to without being noticed, so there's that.... hehe
Better than hearing this news, is the news that owner John is in good health. Which, with COVID was the cause of the original Peabody location on Lowell Street to close. After a little over a year journey for John, we are so thrilled that he is well and our favorite morning delights will be available again in Peabody!
As soon as we have more information on opening date, we will update this article.
If you have never heard of Ziggys and Sons, they have been a Salem staple for over 50 years. The reason they have lasted this long is simple, their donuts and pastries are absolutely delicious. They are tree nut and peanut free too. They offer the only hand cut donuts made fresh every morning! They also offer a selection of muffins, apple and raspberry turnovers, bagels, croissants, apple dumplings and other pastries daily. Everyone's favorite day though is Wednesday or any day they have their famous whoopie pies. If you can't wait until the Peabody location opens, head over to the original 2 Essex Street Salem location.

Check out this great video of owner Ethel DePasquale slicing up a Lemon Cream, Chocolate Angel and Cherry Pies.
What a treat, I got to sit down and talk with Ethel DePasquale, who owns Agawam Diner with her sister Angela Mitchell. It was a little after 10am on a Friday morning and the place was buzzing with regulars enjoying a delicious breakfast with friends and loved ones. Before long, Ethel was needed behind the counter to fulfill some pie orders. The pies were so beautiful, I had to take videos as she made the first slices for customers. Every few minutes we would hear 'I have been dying for the cherry pie' or 'please don't forget a piece of the apple cake too' and then I heard 'before I forget, I better put aside the 2 slices of Chocolate Angel Pie for a customer'. Ummm wait, Chocolate Angel Pie? That isn't on the menu. That is when Ethel smiled and said "Well, I don't advertise it, but if someone asks me for something special, I usually will always try and make it". So if you want to try a specialty that either a customer asked for, or she decided was something she wanted to make for herself, go on Saturday mornings! Ethel also has been whipping up pumpkin rolls, chocolate rolls, linzer cookies and biscotti for the season. I am not sure there is any sweet and delicious baked good that isn't passing through her kitchen!
It is evident that the customer comes first here. Many of the specials and new creations are ideas and requests from their loyal customers. It could be a simple request, like sprinkles on the chocolate cream pie, or for a piece of chocolate angel pie, that I got to enjoy, thanks to a customer requesting it. While not all requests can be accommodated, Ethel will always make the extra effort when she can. This extends to product quality too. With the current distribution shortages, if the right ingredient is not available, unfortunately that item is off the menu for a bit. As a customer, I would rather be told something is not available vs being served a less superior item than normally would be served.
So what did I try? This visit I could not pass on a piece of the Lemon Cream Pie, Chocolate Angel Pie and Chocolate Roll. I will start with my favorite, the Lemon Cream Pie. It is a citrus delight for the tongue! I do not like too strong a lemon flavor and I detest any hint of bitter rind. I am a picky lemon dessert eater and this is the pie that sets the bar for all others. The lemon curd is tart, but not super sour and no bitterness at all. The homemade whipped cream adds the sweetness that I personally need with the tart curd. I could literally eat the whole pie!
Am I the only one that never heard of a Chocolate Angel Pie? It was like a chocolate roll with puddingy Boston cream filling and topped completely with homemade whipped cream. When I say completely covered, this is literally a dome of whipped cream and absolutely mesmerising to look at! It is the perfect balance of sweet, and chocolatey. The one bite I was having to try, turned into eating 3/4 of the piece!
Finally for the chocolate roll, my fathers favorite. It is rich and decadent and will have any chocolate lover in complete bliss. The chocolate frosting makes this completely sinful!
While this visit was all about desserts, their breakfast and lunch is one of the best around. They serve breakfast all day. I love that I never have to worry about the time of day when heading to Agawam Diner. The specials menu is loaded with all our favorite comfort food. Baked mac n cheese, chicken pot pie, beef stew, liver and onions (one of my favorites), meatloaf dinner, crab cakes, steak tips, turkey tips TURKEY TIPS, I LOVE TURKEY TIPS! So hop in your car and get yourself down to Agawam Diner, you will thank me later!
Normal Pies on the menu to order are Banana Cream, Pumpkin Cream, Chocolate Cream, Coconut Cream, Lemon Cream, Apple, Blueberry, Cherry, Strawberry Rhubarb, Lemon Meringue, Custard, Squash, Pecan and Mince. They also have the pumpkin and chocolate rolls and cookies too!
The NSE Choice for Thanksgiving Ordering is from Meat and Sweet Foods. WORLD Championship Award Winning BBQ & Desserts. They have everything you need from breakfast through late night desserts!
